My work addresses crowds and urban lifestyle, creating mystery in the form of faceless strangers, I question behaviour, personality, and direction. The active society we live in is illustrated through monochrome pedestrians which spill through an empty white space. Being one in a sea of strangers can be lonely, it can also conceal behaviour as it is difficult to pinpoint an individual within a crowd. My practical work makes connections with surveillance and the concept of ‘big brother’.
Illustrating both criminal and mundane behaviour, my own photographs and CCTV frames are combined to capture real moments in the hustle and bustle of the city. Using black ink and a water wash only, I layer and arrange projections into unique street views. The figures appear faceless to enhance the sense of anonymousness; these ‘ghost like’ people suggest lack of identity, and the possibility of being lost in a crowd.
