Material Memories

My studio practice explores the representation of memory through encounters with clothing that belonged to my family. These items of clothing trigger memories of family holidays and special occasions. I have used these items to make textile objects, through traditional craft techniques, such as, rag rugging and knotting. In the past such techniques were used to preserve memories held within clothing.
These objects have become an intermediate stage in my studio practice as they have been collectively used as inspiration for my large-scale drawings. The drawings are a direct representation of the folds and creases within the fabric sculptures. These drawings are made from the fabric sculptures themselves and the detail photographic observations I made through the lens.
The large-scale drawings are hanging in the Parkinson Building, at the University of Leeds.
