Designing abstract wrapping paper is my passion. I like to take a basic theme, such as sweets and transform them into abstract, compositions of layered patterns. Dissecting sweets to reveal intriguing new shapes and using historical inspiration from Bauhaus paintings, are both aspects which are crucial to the quirky outcome of my designs.

My final knit collection explores the vibrant colours and structures of flowers and butterflies whilst pushing the boundaries of the knitting machine. By experimenting with needle formations and various yarns, I have created some innovative fabrics. Each piece has an end use in mind and aims to enhance the figure by planning the proportion of colour and pattern. I am delighted to have been chosen as a winner of Wool School, a collaboration between Campaign for Wool partner retailers and universities across the United Kingdom. My jumper design will be developed, produced and launched in Marks & Spencer stores during Wool Week 15th-21st October 2012.

Kaleidoscopic images are used to emulate the distortion and inaccuracy of memory. Inks applied to knitted fabrics reflect the pixels viewed through the kaleidoscope. By applying water the coloured dyes split, spread and merge in a way reminiscent of the chromatography process. The dyed fabrics are unravelled and re-knit, allowing the colours to disperse across the pieces.

Eleanor's work is inspired by colour dispersion, enlarged pixels and kaleidoscopic distortion.

I am a surface pattern designer whose present, creative interest includes natural forms.

The initial inspiration for my work is often my own photographs of nature. I then explore the colour, pattern and texture in my photography. These often develop into digital images that contain my photographs and digital drawings. I go on to investigate placement and repeating designs.

I am excited about new opportunities to further develop my current designs and ideas.

I welcome any interest and feedback about my work.

My design practice is driven by a strong passion for surface print and illustration and I enjoy designing for a variety of textile end-uses; from gift wrap and stationary to bedding and wallpaper. My style has grown from a love of hand-drawn imagery which I then transfer onto Photoshop and Illustrator, enhancing the colour palette and often placing into repeat. My time at the University of Leeds along with my year in industry, have fuelled my desire to work in the creative industry and I am now looking to further a career as a textile print designer.

Degree Show Collections:
For my final year project, I have worked from the theme of Childhood Nostalgia inspired by the concept of vintage childrenís play. The show is comprised of two digital print collections, one consisting of borders for a nursery room and the other made up of wallpapers for a young boyís bedroom.

My practice demonstrates the relationship and translation between a landscape and a flat painted image. Working through paint in oil colour applied on board, initial ideas emerge from the photographic image and a history of place left in a landscape. The works are concerned with the process of making and traditions of layering paint that leave a history on the surface heightening the emphasis to the landscape it concerns.

The practice then develops to work with contours left on the image surface, highlighting abstractions and linear construction formed by the initial painting process. The work turns toward a very intuitive conversation, creating a relationship between surface and final overlaid paint.

There is an element of juxtaposition within the images, fluid, unconstrained paintwork compiles the surface in a contrast to carefully defined, almost geometric shapes that fit or overlap with the contours and distinctions on the paint surface.

I am a textile designer primarily interested in producing repeat pattern for wallpaper. My work is led first by theme and then by technique. I have developed a drawing style, which consists mainly of continuous line and I like to combine this with digital techniques and hand produced textures. I enjoy experimenting widely and this has led me to producing a body of varied work. My academic research has been concerned with the impact of digital design and manufacturing technologies on the role of the textile designer and this is something that underpins my creative practice.

Dysfunctional relations between identity and behaviour are portrayed in my collection of digital/organic hybrids, emphasising the struggle facing the masked ‘monster’: the psychopath. A featureless abstract of an actual person, the psychopath dons a series of guises masking their abundantly absent conscience.
My current exhibition work is motivated by concealed identity, directing attention to the complex mass of fabrication, which exists below the surface. Lacking the manacles of integrity which bind the bulk of humanity, the psychopath is forced to imitate and mimic, impersonating a viable version of a being acceptable to society.
The materials I use in my work echo the subject matter; the reflective surface of the vinyl prints characterise the incessant conflict between good and bad, in an individual deprived of remorse and a genuine moral compass.
Previous works include visual interpretations of the fragile perception of physical-self, in a world obsessed with youth and beauty.

My work tries to combine art and functionality through a series of conceptual clothing designs, which are sculptural pieces. I am exploring the link between The Artist and The Artisan. Ideas of empowering the female and expressing the changing role of the female have informed my art. I created a dress, rather than a sculpture representing bullet material, in order to highlight the femininity and vulnerability of the skin; in which a bullet would normally pierce and destroy, rather than protect. Like a magpie, I am attracted to shiny objects, excited by colour and am drawn to surfaces reflecting the light. Throughout this year I have been inspired by the sculptural qualities of haute couture and I have incorporated those design elements into my sculptures by producing ‘Wearable Art’.

Old photographs have a compelling ID that evokes viewers and stimulates questions. Where are the photos from? What is occurring within each photograph?

Through working monochromatically, my paintings give the viewer access to the stored light and expressions of personal family members that were, at one time, only contained within lost photographs.

Through working with photographs containing personal memories of the long since deceased taken between 1908-1950, the only trigger of memory comes through fragments of photographs that prove the life the characters once lived, now that their personalities are diminished.

Sourcing old photographs from a family member bound with dementia, provided an extra depth to which I was able to consider my families past. The photographs relay information from distant past relations, yet without a non-suffering relative alive to date, the considerations of the memories collected within each photograph are unknown. These uncertain moments of importance have once been captured, but the reasons long faded, instead evidence is given through my paintings.

I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Textile Design at Leeds, the constant energy of the city is so refreshing. Because I absolutely love to draw I found myself being quite wary the first time I placed my drawings into the computer fearing that I would lose my style. After overcoming my initial fears Iíve come to love the versatility CAD brings to my drawings, that I can continually reinvent them to find new styles.

I specialise in creating bespoke interior pieces. To create my work I combine together a number of different hand crafted techniques along side computer aided techniques, such as laser cutting. I use a variety of old and new sourced materials to celebrate traditional and contemporary techniques, as seen in my installation. This installation piece is based around the revival of the net curtain and the theme of the decaying home. By taking a material such as the net curtain, which over recent years has begun to be seen as out dated, and putting it into a different context to which it is normally seen, I hope to change the audience’s perception of this almost forgotten interior material.

My work concentrates mainly on patterns from a variety of different sources, ranging from Indian fabrics to forms found within flowers.
The combination of flower patterns and used envelopes is a representation of the meanings behind flowers, the documented memory and the journey flowers have to take before reaching their final destination of sale, in terms of exportation and importation.
Geometric shapes are important in my work to create contrast to the distorted forms of the opened envelopes. In all pieces repetition is of an underlying significance.

Being from the North Yorkshire countryside, brought up on carboots and home cooking it's a wonder I made it to the city at all. I was interested in crafts from a young age and between my mum, textile teacher and art teachers my love for drawing, creating, sewing and designing grew. Having originally chosen to do a Fashion Design degree but not achieving the required grades, I was offered the Textile Design course instead. People talk about fate and things happening for a reason, well this was one of those moments. This course has helped me develop my drawing skills, introduced me to new software such as Adobe Illustrator and Indesign and made me realise how much I enjoy designing patterns for fabric and print.

My practice centres upon the use of drawing as a primitive yet descriptive tool that embodies the interaction between the human body and human nature within a highly-industrialised and technology-centred environment. The drawing process concerns itself with the delivery of conceptual thought, each mark made embodies aspects that have been drawn upon from the environment and from experience, there is an encoding of meaning that knits together and displays a web of internal thought processes. One finds this way of working allows one to encapsulate the zeitgeist, the imaginary, the fears and hopes that are possessed, generating a world view through the primacy of the act of drawing. There is a need to contain aspects of uncertainty and doubt within our conceived notions of reality in terms of the environment and our own consciousness, whilst maintaining light-heartedness and aspects of comedy that are the endearing and solid foundations of humanity.

My practice centres around print and photography as the primary mediums, with drawing as an accompaniment. I find that the various print techniques lend themselves well to different projects and themes. Ultimately the layering process, which is key to print, has become central in the development of the composition.

My prints are concerned with the notion of place and memory concentrating on the combination of past and present within one single image. My use of colour is predominantly monochrome incorporating the use of black, grey and white tones. The integration of the artist’s hand inside the image raises questions about the identity of both the person and place, and the significance of the landscape. The figures are essential as a representation of the trace of family in the place.

The ideas and work originated through an interest in personal history, taking photographs, making sketches and constantly investigating and re-visiting the landscape of my hometown.

My work looks at space both physically and spiritually. I believe that architecture represents the space of existence, in which memory and the unconscious crystalize. Fantasy and imagination fuses with everyday life as an enchantment not only for children, but for adults also. It can be an escape from the real world.

I formulated my works by visiting and sketching architecture, then by making three dimensional works in the form of a Tableau. Their miniature size looks at the relationship between physical space and psychic space, sequentially raising a consciousness of a real world and a fantasy world.

My work is not solely about the retrospective of historical architecture, but how we perceive space within our current circumstances, with high technology and fast living.

Narcoleptic Dream Elements: Maze vs. Mine

My studio practice is inspired by my particularly vivid dream experiences, as a result of my sleep disorder, Narcolepsy. This semester I have focused on two elements in particular from these dreams: The Maze and The Mine. Early on I discovered that attempting to accurately illustrate scenes from the unconscious mind through visual form alone is not possible. This is because a dream is composed of more than just what is seen: It is a combination of senses, emotions and visceral reactions. I therefore chose these specific elements and designed each piece with the aim to evoke an emotional response in my audience. By juxtaposing them in a slightly unsettling way, the audience can not only see some of the images I have seen in my dreams, but also begin to feel the way that I have felt.

The masking tape stencilling technique I used on the two large mazes, along with the contrasting colour selection of the mines, are designed to add to the threatening and unsettling nature of each painting.

My practice is a consideration of the varying states in which energy exists. Taking inspiration from the Italian Arte Povera movement, the materiality of my work is the primary vehicle for the expression of it’s meaning. I have employed everyday materials including electrical tape, tree branches and gelatin to express different states of energy. Through their transformation into art objects, the forms and properties of these materials take on new conceptual meaning. For instance in my gelatin piece the substance represents a mass of resting water in a state between static and moveable, speaking of an unleashed potential energy.

Bonvils

My practice is concerned with exploration of place and memory fixed both within landscape and interiors. I am interested in the way certain objects, patterns and textures become familiar and refer the viewer simultaneously to past and present points in time. These points in time can never be fully recovered as they become layered by other memories and events. Some remain clearer and more readily accessible than others but they all merge to form an abstract visual whole that will continue to unfold through my medium of painted collaged layers.

The subject matter is based on my Grandadʼs home in Dorset set in the Isle of Purbeck. The building and surrounding countryside have been an integral part of my personal history and they hold a wide range of memories - both experienced and visual. My practice is informed by how this personal familiarity is layered and merged over time.

My artwork relies on the use of sequential imagery within book format. I began to focus on producing a series of four books which explore individual stories, but which contribute towards one overall narrative as they can connect and can be read as one. Within each book I have deconstructed the life cycle of the dinosaur, exploring birth, life, death and the afterlife in an unconventional manner. Although I have utilised a variety of materials whilst constructing my images, my methodology is consistent. Each book reveals an illustrative approach towards the subject matter, reinforcing the sequence of the narrative whilst also establishing my own artistic technique.

Based on Renaissance Cabinets of Curiosities this body of work fuses 16th century tradition with contemporary furniture. Each piece of furniture has several drawers or cupboards, holding objects or 'curiosities', which the viewer is invited to explore. The piece plays on the theme of human curiosity and the need to discover the unknown, whilst opposing the usual 'do-not-touch' environment of art galleries.

My work has been inspired by blurring of colour through motion, developing this idea through photography and translating this concept into knitted structures using held stitches. I am interested in creating structural forms through knitted fabrics and enjoy using unconventional materials to see how these react within fabrics.

Working across a variety of mediums, my practice focuses on place and the objects and people that can be found at the sites I examine. The concept of a place being both public and private particularly fascinates me, as does the transient nature of particular locations. My current work concentrates on allotments, specifically those situated on Woodhouse Moor, Leeds. These features of the British urban landscape usually occupy awkward, otherwise unusable spaces.
Through the process of casting I have attempted to capture a range of objects found at the site. The casts translate otherwise forgotten or banal materials into articles worth looking at, they hold a residue of everyday life.
Allotments change through the seasons and as users leave their mark on the space. Based on photographs taken over a four month period, prints and drawings displayed alongside the casts trace the gradual transformation of the space over time.

Throughout my studies at the University of Leeds I have developed a keen interest in casual menswear focusing on essential menswear items and attention to detail. I am interested in every last detail of a garment and its method of construction, creating unique, wearable pieces. Several other areas of interest to me are sustainability and the role of technology within fashion. For my final collection I have concentrated on the concept of modularity and integrated technology to address these issues. During my placement year I worked for Mother of Pearl and French Connection and I have recently been employed by Abercrombie and Fitch in America.

When designing, I work towards evoking a sense of energy by use of bold, confident line quality juxtaposed with the striking injections of colour.
In order to maintain a stream of fresh inspiration, drawing and photography are essential mediums that aid my thought processes, whereby I am able to interpret daily surroundings. To then apply an alternative visual twist through design is a very rewarding process.

As a Textile Design graduate from the University of Leeds, I thoroughly enjoy design challenges in a variety of mediums. I view design as a continual learning process in understanding how others absorb visual information and during the development stages, remaining open to limitless possibilities.

I enjoy creating work which explores contrasting structure with the fluidity of movement. Taking inspiration from a wealth of natural imagery available, I began studying cross sections of fossils and agate, fascinated by the organic shapes and pattern within the hard surfaces. Pattern, colour and texture have been the key sources of inspiration and interest which form the basis of all my work. Using knit has provided the means to accomplish outcomes and effects which are unparalleled using any other medium. By a simple change of yarn, contrasts and subtle changes in texture can be created or dramatic three dimensional pieces can be formed. Having always been fascinated by fashion my fabrics have ultimately been intended for this market. Furthermore I also enjoy creating my own digital prints, which provides the opportunity to work with pattern and colour in a very two dimensional way in contrast to the three dimensional qualities of knit.

Through photography I have aimed to maximise the expressive qualities of my subjects by removing from them the limitations of gesture or pose. The strength of the images is based on isolation, magnification and framing, causing the images to be interpreted as more than just a hand. By changing the scale of the images, and showing them much larger than you might expect and also changing the context of the images, the perception of them is also changed, having an altered impact on the audience. The photographs are reduced almost to the point of abstraction; I have created images that still have an air of humanity whilst also being reminiscent of natural scenes or landscapes. By stripping the subjects of gender, class, culture, sexuality these paradoxically invite questions about precisely those issues.

My work explores urban space and society, a relationship between city and contemporary art practice, incorporating themes of implied space and aiming to challenge space. Time holds a significant role in my work as certain memories are depicted through the method of layering, portraying the change in landscapes.

My paintings are inspired and produced from photographs I have taken of seemingly derelict urban landscapes around Leeds. Using sections of the photographs, I create my own ‘place’, with shifting perspectives. The inclusion of graffiti and familiar objects with occasional areas of photographic detail act almost as a tangible reference point in the larger landscape, hinting at human existence.

Operating with a moderately monochromatic palette, I reflect the photographed area’s ambience using oil paints, spray paints and mixed media, occasionally introducing a hint of vibrant colours. The use of ready-mixed filler gives a concrete texture, taking the subject matter direct to the canvas. Working on a larger scale enables physical engagement with the paint, representing the actual environment.

My inspiration for surface pattern is the Silk Route, which fascinates me as a diffusion of culture and design elements, and a fusion of East and West.

Having an interest in the Asian culture, I am very concerned about the ethical issues that stem from the textile industry, and strive to endorse sustainable and ethically sourced materials and to be aware of the importance of a fair income for those who work on all stages of production.

The cushions maintain the figurative motifs of Asian shoes, fans, parasols and henna hands, whereas the motifs for the wallpaper and curtains have been abstracted from initial drawings of Indian jewellery.

Textiles is the thread that knits all of my interests together and I will never cease experimenting with the endless possibilities that stem from the compilation of pattern, colour and fabric.

I specialise in printed surface pattern with a passion for creating complex repeats. My current art practice encompasses a broad range of art skills from traditional drawing and painting to Computer-Aided Design. I particularly enjoy discovering new ways of manipulating materials from origami to laser cutting and the means by which I can combine traditional with new technology. My designs are created using a combination of hand and digitally drawn motifs, which are put together using Computer Aided Design, retaining a hand-drawn element to my work is something I feel is very important. Late nineteenth century design has particularly influenced my work, as I have focussed on creating a contemporary take on this historical style of design.

Colour and text are a fundamental element within my work and I aspire in creating collections of giftcards which are high in detail and capture animals in an endearing and unique way. The concept that my work has is that it utilises pattern, colour and line in a way that can be translated as forming successful card designs; designed for a range of different occasions.

I studied Textile Design specialising in Mixed Media. This consists of creating surface pattern designs by producing initial drawings and then translating them into Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

All of my designs have been produced for the interior market, including wallpapers, cushions and curtains. My design style combines continuous line hand drawings with digital motifs. My designs are recognisably bright and use overly large scales.

The images shown here are from a project called Butterflies. Using my drawings and digital motifs, I created some overly abstracted designs as well as those more realistic. For this I created a collection of 5 wallpaper designs and 5 cushion designs. Inspiration for this came from designers such as Mat Collishaw, Alaya Gadeh and also the outlet Anthropologie.

My practice explores the notion of the seen and the unseen through the pillars of the self and the ego. The simplicity of my work is representative of the fragility and intangible nature of one’s self. Aided by psychologists and philosophers’ theories (Belk, Freud and Rorschach), my work has come to envelop and praise the beauty and simplicity of the mediums of paper and card emphasising the success and impact of the delivery of message using only one material. I am concerned with trace; both in the physical and mental sense, which is particularly represented in my Rorschach laser cut series (based on independent psychological interpretations of inkblot tests). My pop-out typography series represents a theory by the philosopher Rusell W. Belk, which suggests the extension and material establishment of ones self through a collection of belongings. This explains the decision to present my work in several pieces.

My work addresses crowds and urban lifestyle, creating mystery in the form of faceless strangers, I question behaviour, personality, and direction. The active society we live in is illustrated through monochrome pedestrians which spill through an empty white space. Being one in a sea of strangers can be lonely, it can also conceal behaviour as it is difficult to pinpoint an individual within a crowd. My practical work makes connections with surveillance and the concept of ‘big brother’.
Illustrating both criminal and mundane behaviour, my own photographs and CCTV frames are combined to capture real moments in the hustle and bustle of the city. Using black ink and a water wash only, I layer and arrange projections into unique street views. The figures appear faceless to enhance the sense of anonymousness; these ‘ghost like’ people suggest lack of identity, and the possibility of being lost in a crowd.

Threshold is a triptych of photographs investigating the notion of liminality; focusing on those in-between moments and transitional states which surround and envelop us. Concentrating on those threshold periods of life, my work concerns itself with capturing those changes between dawn and twilight, using the natural light to demonstrate and examine time in relation to place. The blurred figure which contrasts with the sharp backdrop of Leeds reminds us of that which is fleeting and ever changing against that which is constant and static.

Photography was the medium of choice as it documents the lapse in time, acting as a portal to remind us of those liminal moments we might have missed; of where we have been and where we are going. I have displayed the matching dawn and twilight pictures together to heighten the difference time can make to place, and how this in turn affects the way we view the space and the action of the figure. Displaying my work on light boxes emphasises the existence or absence of light present, as well as the depth and unseen liminal space in each picture.

My work centres on the use of symmetry, rhythm and layering to create intricate geometric patterns. The craft element and tactile nature during the construction of my art is just as important to me as the completed work. The mechanical act of creating pattern is an integral element.

Colour has been a vital component in the development of my work; introducing individually vibrant strands of colour to form a harmonious blend that compliments the detailed woven rhythms of the layered geometry.

To emphasize aspects of texture and shadow in the work, I have simplified the images and adopted a monochromatic finish to accentuate the raw quality of the materials.

Illustrations have been focused at book and magazine illustration, and more recently transferring this style to meet the current gift/stationary market. Work created for gift wraps reflects this quirky style, with the use of unique imagery, to create a distinct product. For the future, I would like to continue designing for surface pattern, alongside continuing to create individual illustrations for a diversity of applications. I use layering and a series of juxtapositions to investigate the act of painting as a representation of the physical human body, where paint becomes skin and board becomes flesh. I am interested in manipulating structure and contrasting free-formed areas to create a disjoined but harmonious surface. While the paintings remain semi-abstract, elements of the figurative are apparent in the detailed representation of the patterns of lace. Simple geometric shapes and sensuous curves overlap organic details that link the paintings together into a cohesive series. Small collages with material act as an intermediate process and allow me to physically experience how shape and pattern complement and contrast with one another.

Considering the metaphysical body I have reflected on the transience of mind and body and the location of this within time and space. This adds to the experience of manipulation of paint and perception.

My studio practice investigates the permeable boundaries, which separate art, design and the decorative arts. Contemporary artists are referencing the decorative arts and utilising decorative techniques within their work, resulting in the presence of such arts in galleries which are normally associated exclusively with fine art. Considering how the decorative might be employed as a vehicle for addressing contextual concerns and how the artist is utilising the formal and aesthetic properties of the decorative directly influence my work. Combined with a personal interest in interior design, this body of work explores the decoration of space with organic patterns and mass amounts of colour in the form of an installation formed from papers, pattern and collage.

Material Memories
Pen and Paper
2 x 4.5m by 1.5m

My studio practice explores the representation of memory through encounters with clothing that belonged to my family. These items of clothing trigger memories of family holidays and special occasions. I have used these items to make textile objects, through traditional craft techniques, such as, rag rugging and knotting. In the past such techniques were used to preserve memories held within clothing.
These objects have become an intermediate stage in my studio practice as they have been collectively used as inspiration for my large-scale drawings. The drawings are a direct representation of the folds and creases within the fabric sculptures. These drawings are made from the fabric sculptures themselves and the detail photographic observations I made through the lens.
The large-scale drawings are hanging in the Parkinson Building, at the University of Leeds.

My work focuses on the relationship between the viewer and the piece of art, expressed through the notions of dwelling and non-linear lines. The piece intends to encourage the viewer to engage with the work by touch or to simply walk around the piece. This encouragement will come from the scale, location and materials. The large scale of the work, its outdoor location and craft based material creates the plausibility that the viewer is to walk around the work or even enter the piece.

Organic, natural forms are the inspiration for the sculpture, 'I weaved a dream Ö' which, originated from my previous work. Initially, I focused on simple, rounded shapes, this developed to more complex shapes which, I found in the human body, specifically the muscles.

Overall, this sculpture is a interactive piece that I hope can be enjoyed.

Throughout my time at university I have worked to develop an individual style. After completing my final practical project, I feel that my knit samples have really progressed. The carefully considered placement of detail and colour creates fabrics which would translate well into high quality garments. My work focuses on simple, subtle line distortion; and delicate structural elements, designed to enhance the quality and structure of knitted garments. I have concentrated the development of my knit designs on fabrics which offer elegant detail and sophisticated simplicity. This has allowed me to really focus on the small beautiful details within my fabrics and to consider the drape, handle and elegance.

The mandala is a key concept within my works both metaphorically and literally. It produces a format and perimeter for me to work within, and reiterates the mandalas importance as a symbol within art and psychology. It has been used throughout millennia to signify the divine, symbolising protection, and as connotative of ‘The Great Mother.’

My photographic practice revolves around the notion of space, dereliction and architecture, whilst exploring elements of human trace and presence. I choose locations that show evidence of past human activity or the effects of neglect. I am interested in the way that buildings fall into disrepair as a result of human absence. As well as digital, I also use film photography (35mm and medium format), as both mediums offer different qualities which complement the various subject matters. Photographs present in the exhibition, are silver based C-type prints onto Fuji Matt paper. My photography adheres to strong structural compositions, made up of dominant geometric shapes and symmetry. I attempt to source scenes of an unsightly or mundane nature and reproduce them in an appealing and engaging way.

My two favourite aspects of textile design have always been texture and colour, which I incorporate into my designs through a mixture of photography, hand printing and drawing. By bringing these elements together with computer-aided-design, my aim is to create an interesting surface pattern with depth and detail, sometimes featuring familiar objects or images which at first might not be obvious. I usually design with an intended end-use for wallpaper or interior fabrics, and always enjoy the satisfaction of seeing my final pieces printed. I try to strike a balance in my work so that my designs are original and not overly conventional, whilst also remaining appealing and potentially commercially viable. My immediate plans are to gain experience within the textile design industry and to also continue working as part of the art direction team for Lippy magazine.

The ways in which it is possible to turn anything around us into abstracted images though a series of creative processes interests me. I have an open-ended and serial working practice: working from photographs to create digital art works, these then, inspire new paintings. Recently I have made new digital images from the paintings, making my methodology into a cycle. My focus is on familiar aspects of the objects such as colour, form and texture. I am drawn to bright, vibrant colours which is just part of a playful and exuberant quality of this work.

During my three years at Leeds University I have been continually inspired by nature as the starting point for my designs. I enjoy drawing the form of flowers in different ways, including the patterns and textures created by dissecting flowers. Beginning my process with hand drawn motifs, I always aim to keep these qualities when translating digitally into designs.

The aim of my work is often to generate question and intrigue, leaving it to the viewer to interpret and decide its real meaning. My moving image Artwork is often related back to the body and there is a visceral component to the pieces. The work delves into the unknown, touching on technology and its influence on our daily lives.

The key practice of my work is centred around film and video, using the moving image to produce artwork and video content with skills I have gained through working with high level production companies and self directed projects. My future aims are to continue into the filmmaking and design industry whilst bringing a creative and artistic angle to what I do.

Flora and fauna, natural fabrics... these things inspire me. My designs express the true nature of the individual. I have a great passion for translating concepts into end products with an experimental and original approach. Constant refinement and enhancement are very important to me; I see my work as an evolution from paper to production.

I have worked with womenswear designers in both commercial and niche markets. I experienced a wide variety of the processes within the fashion industry. I had the responsibility of designing garments, several of which were chosen for high street retailers. I also have considerable experience in pattern cutting and making garments, giving me the ability to develop more practical and realistic designs when it comes to production.

My practice concerns space, place and the archive through a variety of different media. This body of work has originated through an interest in the spaces I occupy on a daily basis; the Clothworkers' Buildings that house the School of Design. I explored notions of time, place and memory through considering how people engage with the spaces that the building creates. I have integrated the histories discovered in the archive into multimedia forms by shifting our frame of perspective; the visual is now heard, touch is now seen. "Depending on who we are ... we understand and engage with the world ... in different ways" (Bender 2001) My practice aims to instruct and invite the viewer to experience place in new ways.

‘Vox Populi’

Vox Populi is a Latin phrase which translates literally as the ‘voice of the people’. It is also a phrase used in broadcasting for interviews with the general public. This notion lies at the heart of my body of work and serves as a catalyst in my desire to make ordinary people heard, to give them a voice by creating and broadcasting video as ‘Kinetic Typography’. Using a mixture of primary and secondary source material, I have produced a series of videos, which allow the commentators’ thoughts and views to be channelled in such a way that they reach and influence a wider audience than they otherwise would do.

Taking inspiration from what seems initially to be a simple source, I create a story, asking questions of the source, creating a past, present and future. The story becomes complex and multifaceted and via a process of visual research the intricacies and meaning are exposed.

Only then, with the story unpacked and the meaning laid open can I begin to select the appropriate yarns and woven structures to best represent it, culminating in the creation of a woven textile for internal space.

Combining photography, microscopy and digital imaging, my work explores the relationship between the macro and micro, with a specific focus on rendering the familiar, unfamiliar. Trivial objects, ranging from cigarette filters to compact discs, undergo various methods of abstraction. Photographed both conventionally and through a Scanning Electron Microscope, the resulting images are cropped closely in order to defamiliarise the work further; focusing on geometric forms and areas of symmetry within the objects.

My degree in fashion design has supplied me with an inspiring and challenging curriculum; producing research projects into sustainable fashion; marketing; garment technology and fashion innovation, all encouraging a new outlook to be rendered on the fashion industry. I have produced innovative projects designing for a range of brands, youthful and more mature, high street to designer, produced in depth research into brands creating: mood and inspiration boards, fabric boards, colour palettes and garment technology research.

All my work expresses my enjoyment in producing sensitive project work, which focuses on highlighting the self-expressive and feel good side of fashion design. I have been inspired by mutation, shape distortion and unique colour combinations to create a diverse collection of clothing that can represent a wide range of age and social groups.

Working with collage-based illustration my work is mainly abstract, surreal compositions. Inspired by fashion outlets such as X C V B, trainerspotter and youreyeslie I transfer my illustrative designs into t- shirt prints. My final major project was based on this process but using only material from charity shops to design my prints giving specific designs for certain stores such as Age UK using it as my brand launch.

With a passion for fashion I plan to continue creating bold, graphic imagery for Joystur. With a unique brand philosophy and style I am excited to continue with it in the future testing out new techniques and creating bigger better prints.

The past four years at the University of Leeds has allowed me to develop and structure my drawing technique and design approach. My hand drawn work has evolved into a distinct and established style, which has translated well into computerised design creating collections that I am proud to display. I am heavily influenced by graphic design which can be seen in my final collection; centred around childrenís space themed wrapping papers. My work is generally aimed at the stationery and gift industry, specifically to wrapping papers and gift cards.

My final collection took inspiration from photographs taken of galaxies and stars which then drove me to research into space travel and exploration. The motifs in the collection were hand drawn and adapted to create a collection of childrenís wrapping papers. I am pleased with the result and intend to continue and develop in this area of design.

During my four years at the University of Leeds, not only have I had the opportunity to develop my skills in garment innovation, construction and market & trend research, but I have also gained an in-depth awareness of the history and theory behind design and looking to the future of eco-fashion within an ever-expanding industry.

I had the opportunity to partake in work placements at Hawick Museum and the Scottish Borders Textile Tower house, archiving their historic knitwear collections and exhibitions; and also House of Mooshki, a couture bridal wear company where I was able to put into practice pattern cutting, marketing and working on media advertising, alongside assisting on photo-shoots and catwalks.

From my second year I chose to specialise in knitwear design and construction, developing new textiles through varying techniques on both industrial and domestic machines, and adapting them to suit potential designs.

My work considers the relationship between interior and exterior. In particular I have been influenced by the work of Scottish artist Anya Gallaccio and the decorative quilts of Jane Burch Chochran, as well as both Anish Kapoor and Yayoi Kusama’s investigations into reflective surfaces.
The MDF structure acts as a vehicle for a series of architectural found objects, including two window frames retrieved from an old garage, a domestic interior door with exterior furniture and a skylight from a reclamation yard.

The ‘rugs’ are made up of a mixture of buttons and plant materials, suggesting both nature and the home. The word button comes from the French word for bud, providing a presence of interior and exterior.

The polished steel contained within the structure provides a surface on which the ‘rugs’ are reflected, transferring them into their traditional places, on the floor and the wall.

After attending a jewellery course, I’m very interested in pursuing jewellery.

During my time at University my practice has predominantly been influenced by surreal and decorative art. My portfolio of work from this year is made up of screen prints, photographic etches and graphic designs for fabric. For my final degree show I created an installation based on the text ‘Household Gods’ by Deborah Cohen. The space created was therefore a consideration of embodied experience, cultural values and the history of the British home.

Harriet’s expertise is in producing structured knitted design for fashion outcomes. She has worked extensively within the fashion and textiles industries, gaining internships with international trend forecasting company Premiére Vision, in Paris, and American fashion designer Sue Wong, as well as working for the British Fashion Council and FAD (Fashion Awareness Direct). This wide variety of experiences has developed her understanding of this creative industry, pushing her to produce innovative and exciting woollen knitted designs. Her latest collection was inspired by the Japanese art of origami and paper folding, as well as from key Japanese designers, such as Issey Miyake. The hand made fabrics form three-dimensional shapes through their inherent structure, creating intricate yet bold designs.

She has also done research into the current British textile industry, particularly in relation to technical textiles.

Universe, Place and Sound

The technical definition of the term universe is described as “all existing matter and space considered as a whole”. However, it could also be defined as “a particular sphere of activity, interest or experience”. My work aims to create an installation that explores the many universes within society formed by the general pubic. In order to explore these universes I have taken photographs of various windows that work as a framing device and a point of threshold or portal from once space to another. I have chosen to focus closely on the animosity of what it is that goes on behind the glass and what can and can’t be seen. The photographs display the quality of reflective surface, texture and structure as a means of oscillating between interiority and exteriority.

My practice investigates architecture and urban space through a lens based exploration of surface and texture. The impact the elements of a city have on society is a key focus within this investigation; paying particular attention to psychogeography - the modern study of exploring the behavioral impact of urban place, and historically an ideology examined through writers as an act of urban wandering.

Within this project two specific buildings were chosen for their architectural and historical interest in aim to examine urban space through the surfaces that capsulate the history of the structure. In order to gain a thorough insight the buildings were site specific in separate locations, the first, Armley Mills, Leeds, and the second Wapping Hydraulic Power Station, East London. The resulting exploration is documented in a series of artist’s books, each focusing on a different aspect of surface within the buildings.

‘La Courneuve’ is a commune situated in the suburbs of Paris. Built at a rapid pace, with the construction of vast council estates it is also an area in a state of unease/political upheaval, and with the rise of the far right in France it has created a tangible fear within the immigrant population.

This area in Paris was alien to me in both its geography and culture; this became pivotal to my experience and the outcome of the work. My documentation of ‘La Courneuve’ is represented by:

Large format photographs showing a set of apertures framing the same building, at different angles.

The recording is a collection of site sounds.

Artist books, showing the built environment of ‘La Courneuve’.

The 3D model of void.

The photographic and 3D work suggests a desolate place, however, the sound recording reveals the true vibrancy of the community that exists within ‘La Courneuve’.
